“If you don’t love what you do, you won’t do it with much conviction or passion.” – Mia Hamm
My name is Tyler Marie Myers and I am a senior at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. I’ve played lacrosse for 10 years and want to continue growing with the sport and in life. I greatly appreciate the time you’re taking to learn more about my passion and goals and the skill set and dedication I feel I can offer playing lacrosse at the collegiate level.
I have always had a passion for sports, or activity and movement prior to my first exposure. I grew up in Central California playing soccer since I was in preschool. I recall getting a grasp on that ball during my first game on my co-ed pre-k team and running it into our own goal scoring for the opposing team. Although I didn’t understand the rules at such a young age, my instinct was to go without anything stopping me!
Our family moved to San Diego when I was in first grade and by third grade, I was introduced to the game of lacrosse. I wanted to find a spring sport and lacrosse was recommended due to my love for soccer. My parents knew little about the sport therefore watched videos with me on YouTube and took me to Play it Again Sports to select equipment as they weren’t sure I’d use it past the first season. I fell in love with the sport during my first game. During that game, I had little knowledge on the rules and just knew to stop when the ref would blow the whistle (which was constant in youth games). All I knew was what I had studied on YouTube and before I could even accurately cradle, I ended scoring seven goals during that game. I figured it was beginners luck but when this became consistent, I quickly learned that the speed and agility I gained from soccer had carried over to lacrosse. I loved the speed of the game and the rush I felt when I ran the ball from one end of the field to the other. Although I feel I’m a versatile player and athlete, I also play mid in soccer and feel my quick feet and reaction makes me an asset to my team in this position.
Well, our family made one more move, this time from the California sunshine to the Minnesota snow where weather impacts the length of the season for field sports and winter training is highly competitive due to access to indoor turf. Since my two sports began colliding, I felt it was necessary to make a decision based on my future goals. I’ve played club soccer and in house lacrosse since third grade (with in house soccer from pre-k through second grade). What do I want to pursue? Where does my passion lie? My club soccer team became a second family to me. My coach became a mentor; in the sport and in life. I’ve had the opportunity to help coach the younger teams and had the opportunity to take on a leadership role. Yet, I feel these relationships have been what has kept me invested in the sport rather than transitioning my focus to where I see my future. This became evident when I started practicing with the Apple Valley High School Varsity Lacrosse Team as an eighth grader. I quickly made connections and discussed club opportunities with my peers. This is what I wanted: to continue on this path, create leadership opportunities in this sport, play and compete at a highly competitive level, surround myself with individuals that share my same goals, and to play college level lacrosse while pursuing my academic goals.
As I previously mentioned a passion for activity and movement, this passion expands to the knowledge behind motion, human anatomy, medicine and physical injury (prevention, diagnosis, surgery, and post). Academics are extremely important to me and although I have a passion to play lacrosse in college, my goal is to play for a college that offers a strong undergraduate program in pre-med so I can pursue a career in the medical field.
I hold myself to a very high standard in life, athletics and academics and I want to surround myself with individuals and teammates that share my vision, level of commitment, and integrity. As I continue my journey through high school and club lacrosse, I will add highlight footage and game statistics to my profile. I look forward to considering what options lie ahead for my future in this sport and in academics.
