Many people believe that only one life experience shapes them into the people they are today. I believe that cumulative life-changing experiences and life-changing people shape a person. The first experience that shaped my competitive nature was in second grade during the science fair. A boy in my class kept telling me that his experiment would be better. I spent hours figuring out what to do and I finally decided on chocolate-sealed envelopes which, after long and messy hours, beat his cookie cup. From that point on, I embraced my competitive nature and used it to better myself on and off the field. This event did not fully shape who I am, but rather it shaped a piece of me.
One person who constantly shapes me is my Aunt Joyce. Her positivity and confidence in me influence my goals. After being diagnosed with a neurological disease, my aunt had to recreate herself by leaving her occupation as a doctor. Her quick ability to find love in other things, such as artwork, has influenced me to also find love in new things such as lacrosse. Embarrassingly, I walked into the junior varsity lacrosse tryouts in ninth grade with no idea what the rules were. After watching multiple cradling videos and going to the wall every day after school, I completely forgot to study the rules. As soon as I raked the ball, I thought I would be cut. Luckily, my coach saw something in me that she wanted to work with and she taught me the rule of the game that I quickly fell in love with. I think part of my eagerness for lacrosse season stems from how many new things I have yet to try. After my coach told me that I would be starting my first varsity game as a defender, I panicked. But after one season of learning a new position, I learned not only the game but how badly I wished for more time to play lacrosse.
In college, I desire to follow the Pre-Med path like my aunt and I hope to find a coach who understands that my academics do come first. Throughout high school, I managed my time very well and balanced my sports with my classes. On the field or in the classroom, I fully invest myself in the present action. Another personality trait that I have is my need to always be doing something. Even when I am watching Grey’s Anatomy or The Replacements, I either sketch or write down piano notes from YouTube. Some random things about me are that I love music (I want to go to a concert in every genre), I want to live in Spain for a year to be fluent in Spanish, I love the Last Song, I secretly listen to my dad’s music (Bruce Springsteen), I love hiking with my dog, and I love the smell of gasoline because it reminds me of summer boats. So that’s me and I hope that you’ll take a chance on me just like how my high school lacrosse coach did. Thanks for reading!
