Hello! My name is Anastasia and I am in Grade 11 at Southridge School, a university prep school in Surrey, British Columbia. Coming from a first generation immigrant family, I looked up my parents who arrived with two suitcases. Through watching them and growing up in their environment, I learned hard work and determination from watching them work night shifts and climb the ranks of a train company. They passed that hard work and determination onto me. I take these attributes into everything I do, whether it be my schoolwork or extra curricular activities. At the boathouse, this transcribes to me always being the first one there, coming ready to row mentally and physically, I make sure my team is ready, I message or call my teammates to ask if they are coming to practice in case they forgot to sign up to help my coach. I'm not a rower who "just goes through the motions'', I am there to excel and get better. I also believe that winning, though it is good, is an exception. A team can't expect to win every race, it's not humanly possible but we need to always try. What a team can do is treat every practice seriously, celebrate every pb no matter how small, and celebrate growth. Being team captain, I try to convey this message to my teammates through my leadership and mentality. I believe that every workout is important and should be done to the best of my ability. Before rowing, I played competitive soccer for eight years and through that, I learned how important teamwork is. Teamwork isn't just about working together but knowing when it is time to focus and when it's time to get to know the team better. All these attributes combined make me an excellent candidate for any university looking for a hardworking, dedicated, mentally and physically strong athlete who enjoys being in a competitive environment and is looking to build friendships along the way.
