Hello My Name is Sydney Darensburg
As someone who has dreamed of becoming a doctor, and set this as my goal in life. I spend some of my free time as a hospital volunteer where I get the chance to help people. I realized hospitals are stressful environments for patients, family members, doctors, nurses, and other visitors. By being a volunteer, I help alleviate stress for all parties involved. I provide this same type of relief and support to my sports teammates because rowing or any sport can be as stressful as being ill. I am stern when there is a need to be but and encouraging when necessary. For this reason, I want to donate my life to being a doctor and offering my help to doctors and nurses as well as the patients.
Most of my extracurricular activities outside of rowing and rock climbing are spent volunteering my time with people and as an animal foster. I love helping and nurturing all things living. Rowing is much like my volunteer jobs since rowing is a team sport; we all help each other. We build on each other's strengths, bringing success; As a team, we help each other through weaknesses and turn them into strengths. This is much like helping people and animals, who, after assisting them by brightening their day or helping them heal, leads to a life of success.
I am a good candidate for a college rowing team because of my helping nature and understanding the key to success involves team effort. With friends as well as family, I know how to be kind and helpful. With animals being tough is necessary to get them trained to be an exceptional pet. The same mixture can make good athletes.
I have a lot of balance in my life, which is essential for an athlete's mental health. I have learned to be mentally strong due to some problematic medical situations as a child, so I love medicine. These situations have allowed me to flourish as a person and become determined and tenacious.
Unlike most other recruits, I have had many years of training as a rock climber and building mental toughness and physical toughness. Most athletes do not have this unique background. I have excelled in school as well as sports. I am familiar with balancing a demanding sports schedule and maintaining good grades at a high-performing high school. There are not many students like me.
