Talofa, my name is A'va Vaifanua. I'm a Junior at Avon High School, located in Avon, CT. During my Freshman year, I joined the school's soccer team. However, I didn't feel a sense of belonging with the team and couldn't envision myself fully committing to the sport. This all changed when I took up rowing in the fall of my Sophomore year. I was instantly captivated by the sport, not only because I found something I could excel at, but also because of the supportive and encouraging environment fostered by my teammates. As a person of Pacific Islander heritage, I've faced challenges in discovering my identity. My grandmother, upon her immigration to this country, was compelled to sever ties with her cultural roots. Through rowing, I've found a way to reconnect with our heritage of wayfaring, reminding my grandmother and the rest of my family of our rich cultural history. Growing up, I didn't feel like my people were represented enough, or at all. I wish to change that for future generations, and that starts with me. I love what I do, and I hope to continue rowing at the next level to make myself and my ancestors proud. E Taua le Sui. Faatasi ai ma le faamoemoe,
