I began rowing in the Fall of 2017, after swimming competitively for seven years. Swimmers I knew had switched to rowing before me and I was attracted to the teamwork involved in rowing, which was lacking in swimming. I like communicating and working with others to achieve goals and to win, whether at school or in sports. I fell in love with rowing the first time that I went out on the water, and even more so when I got to know my new teammates.
I started in the Novice group at Miami Rowing Club and moved to the varsity in February 2018, where I row in the lightweight eight boat. I am proud to say that my teammates and I recently qualified for the Youth National Championships, where we will be competing in early June 2018. I have only done two 2K erg tests so far, once when I began rowing (8:05) and another when I joined the varsity (7:50). I feel that my strength, stamina, and technique have improved since I joined the varsity and logged more practice time and gained experience.
I hope and expect to continue to improve my rowing, and I plan on rowing in college. The opportunity to continue to compete and to form a bond and share experiences with teammates during college is very important to me. Academics are also very important to me. I plan to study astrophysics or a similar STEM subject in college. Participating in rowing will also add structure and discipline to my college experience, which I believe will help me with my studies.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for considering me. I never thought that I might row in college when I began not too long ago, but now I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to do so!
