Personal Statement

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am a high school junior  with a passion for music and athletics. I have been playing the piano since the age of six and now focus my attention on saxophone and clarinet.  I am a member of the marching band, jazz band and classical band. My parents are both entrepreneurs, and own a clothing line together and I would hope to one day work alongside them with a degree in business and a minor in fashion merchandising.

In addition to my musical talents, I am also an accomplished swimmer and have been on the varsity swim team for two years. I have a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence, qualities that have helped me excel in the pool and in the classroom.

I have discovered a my passion for rowing at my local CrossFit gym in 7th grade prior to Covid, and I have attended camps both in Indiana and in Sag Harbor NY every summer since. The sport is something I have loved for years, both to watch and to be on the water myself, and would like to pursue this sport in college. The combination of strength, endurance, and teamwork required in rowing appeals to me and I believe it will complement my skills and interests. I am eager to join a rowing team and contribute my passion, drive, and dedication to the sport.

I am confident that my diverse background and well-rounded interests will make me a valuable addition to your college community. I am excited to continue my growth as a student-athlete and a musician in a supportive and challenging environment. I believe that your college will provide me with the opportunities and resources to fulfill my potential and achieve my goals.

Thank you for considering my profile. I look forward to the opportunity to join your college community and contribute to its vibrant and diverse culture.

Sincerely,

Helena Lehr

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Sag Harbor Rowing Camp
  • 6/17/24 to 6/28/24
  • I have attended this camp every summer since my freshman year. It is a sculling boat community that has an array of different levels of rowers. Each week a different college coach is invited to help coach the campers, and I've had the pleasure of working with many different coaches with different coaching techniques. I here learned how to bow, and I was given the opportunity to row with them at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia, bowing a quad.
  • Camp/Event
  • Indianapolis Rowing Center
  • 6/06/22 to 6/10/22
  • I attended this camp the summer before my sophomore year when I was beginning to learn how to sweep. I learned how to stroke an 8 and a lot about rowing technique.

Training

  • I go to FORCE Fitness gym once a week with a specialized trainer.
  • 2 years
  • I get personalized workout written at FORCE and I have a specialized trainer there to improve my skill around a weight room. The concept 2 they have there is very nice, so I row every time I have the opportunity.
  • I go to the YMCA and lift 3-4 times a week
  • 3 years
  • I have done this during the off season of swimming so that I can get on the erg, swim, and lift how I feel comfortable.

Additional Sports

  • Swimming
  • 7 years
  • Varsity Team
  • I have made it to sectional finals for 2 years in the 200 IM, and this past year I had the opportunity to swim my 100 free at finals.
