Personal Statement
My name is Ruby Church and I am a 17 year old female rower from Tauranga, New Zealand. I am emailing you today to express interest in possible recruitment to your university in 2024, and for the years after that and apply for a full or partial scholarship to help fund this. I am in my 6th season of rowing currently and am a member of Tauranga rowing club, coached by Steven Finlayson.
Some of my recent results include:
27th March 2023 - Maadi Cup - 12th U18 double (5th fastest North Island crew),
U18 single - raced repecharge and won, but had my single weighed and it turned up 0.2kgs underweight. We found out the scales they used for this regatta were different to every other regatta this season and hadn’t been calibrated since January. We launched a formal complaint and they recalibrated the scales and they were wrong, my boat then was reweighted and confirmed to be the right weight. Due to it being unfair on other crews who had also been eliminated due to this issue I was allowed to race the semi final and get an official time but not have it recorded on rowIT or allowed to progress to a final. I had the 8th fastest time overall out of the semifinals though.
10th March 2023 - North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships - 6th U18 single, 7th U18 double
14th February 2023 - New Zealand Rowing Championships - 10th in club single, 13th in club double (Double partner had tonsillitis).
28th January 2023 - North Island Club Championships - 6th in club single, 3rd in club double.
16th December 2022 - Karapiro Christmas regatta - 6th in club single (Had to row in a heavyweight men's single designed for around 95kgs due to a mix up), 1st in club double.
26th November 2022 - Karapiro Club regatta - 1st club single, 3rd senior quad
12th November 2022 - Karapiro Memorial regatta - 1st U18 single, 1st U18 double, 2nd senior quad.
My current 2km erg time is 7:33.0, as of 24th February 2023.
