Personal Statement
Kia ora (Hello)
My name is Alexandra (Alex) Robinson. I live with my parents, Greg and Maria, my twin sister Eva and my brother Andre. We live on a lifestyle property (10 acres) in North Canterbury, New Zealand, where we have a dog, a flock of sheep, and some chickens. I am 6’1’’ tall and weigh 170 lbs.
I attend Villa Maria College, (Catholic Girls High School) Christchurch New Zealand, and am the House Captain for Ennis House.
I am halfway through my second season of rowing. I absolutely love the sport and have been thrilled with my progress to date. My recent 2 km erg time has cemented some excellent training sessions - 7min 19sec. I have recently attended the New Zealand U19 Development Camp at Twizel. I am hoping to attend the trials for the NZ U19 rowing team later in the year. Last year, my school's novice quad won Gold at South Island Secondary Schools and Maadi Cups.
I prefer stroke but am happy to row anywhere in the boat. Our school focuses on sculling, but I can also sweep (both sides) well and go easily between the two styles.
In addition to rowing, I am a North Canterbury Representative for U19 Basketball and Canterbury Representative for Secondary School Netball. I was invited to attend the NZ Secondary Schools trials for Netball in January but was unable to attend due to having Covid at the time. I have also represented my country, playing in the New Zealand Basketball U14 side.
I love the friendship, support and physicality that all sport brings to my life. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to be part of a great team that performs at its absolute best at the moment of competition.
Over the last two years I have volunteered on a regular basis with St John – I have received an award from school for completing over 250 hours of voluntary work. I have obtained a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.
I am interested in pursuing a career in a medical field - ideally nursing - and hope that obtaining a scholarship to a College in the United States will allow me to grow as a rowing athlete while laying the foundation for a career in a medical field.
I am an excellent team player and bring a positive attitude to all sessions to build up my crew mates and teams. I love to perfect new skills and training techniques. I pride myself on being a hard and physical athlete.
