Personal Statement
Hi, my names Ruby Hakkenbroek, I'm a forth year, fifth season rower from New Zealand. Since I was a little girl I have always had an athletic bone in my body, participating in all sorts growing up and always wanting to push myself to try new things. I was a competitive swimmer for three years leading up to high school where I knew I wanted to give rowing a go as my older sister had introduced our family to the sport two years prior. I signed up for the 6 week learn to row pragramme and it was safe to say I fell in love with every attribute of the sport, I spent my novice season at school where I attended the Maadi cup in 2021, from then on I joined Auckland Rowing Club where I have been competing at club and senior level for the past three seasons, through these seasons I come off the end of nationals with new appreciations of the sport, I love pushing myself to new physical levels, aiming for a lower erg score or working on how to make each stroke the most efficient in training for racing. Rowing has taught me so much about myself and helped shape me into the person I am today, I love being able to experience all of this in a team environment where we can support each other and help bring each other up to succeed as a team and also reach personal goals. I believe College Rowing is an amazing oppotunity to help reach my goals with furthering a rowing career along side working towards a degree academically.
