Personal Statement
I have been rowing since I was 13 years old, and although my health this past season inhibited my training, I strived to remain as involved as I could. I competed in the Second Crew Boatrace at Roodeplaat Dam in December 2018, and my crew won against St. Andrew's School for Girls Rowing Club. My partner and I also achieved a bronze medal in the South African Rowing Championships in the coxless pair.
I have had so many incredible opportunities because of this sport, including being invited to be a part of the South African Schools Rowing Union development tour to England in 2017. My crew achieved a gold medal in the Wallingford Regatta.
I am a dedicated, hard-working athlete and I constantly strive to improve myself. I believe I am a leader because I am self-motivated, reliable, and I am able to coalesce my peers and my juniors into a team that performs greater than the individuals, , but I am also a team player because I am trustworthy, I have good people skills and work well in a group. My problem-solving skills serve both individual and team aspirations very well.
Academically, I am a high achiever with a strong work ethic. Furthermore, I am very determined and conscientious. I am a critical thinker, and I believe that this will stand me in good stead for my studies in psychology.
As a person, I am empathetic, compassionate and have a very strong social conscience. Over the years, I have dedicated my time to the Hospice Wits and Kids Haven organisations, and have also done community service for my school.
I wish to study psychology as my own family adversities have strengthened me and inspired me to reach out to others. I have always been singled out as a mentor and a good listener.
It would be an unbelievable privilege and opportunity to attend an American university and I look forward to giving service and honour to any institution which I am lucky enough to attend.
