Evalyn Palmer '27 Recruiting Profile

My name is Evalyn Palmer, and I am enrolled in the Ankeny High School Class of 2027. I am a member of the Des Moines Youth Rowing Club, and I’ve been rowing for 2 years. I have participated in athletics since the age of 7, such as basketball, volleyball, and track, learning many valuable lessons and experiencing a lot of growth throughout those years, but not as much as I have in my years of rowing. 

I came across rowing through my mom, who is a former rower at Drake University. The program I am a part of is small, which has pushed me to be an even harder worker by allowing me to participate in numerous races, in multiple different seats during regattas. This experience has built up my overall technique, strength, and mental endurance. Rowing is a sport I have grown to love; it has made me a better person all around, giving me a safe place to be myself, an internal drive, and a confidence I never had before. My growth is visible in every aspect of my life, whether it's in my other sports, academics, or simply pushing myself to build better habits and lifestyle choices.

Growing up as an athlete and through my seasons of rowing, I have learned how to maintain control, keep a level head, and find motivation within myself. These lessons have filtered through my life, providing me with a balance and internal drive I can rely on. With the love I hold for this sport and the growth I have experienced in the few years I’ve participated in it, I know I want rowing to be part of my collegiate career.
