My name is Susan Bustin and I am 17 years old. I live in Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada and attend Rothesay High School. At school I enjoy math, sciences and english. I currently have a 96% overall average and have received a High Honours with Distinction award for my grades. I am a multi-sport athlete and compete on the Rothesay High School Varsity teams for Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball. In my final year, I have the honour of being captain of the basketball team.
I started competitive rowing in May 2021 at the Kennebecasis Rowing Club (KRC) in Rothesay. My first summer of rowing I was on the Competitive B Team and trained 5 days a week in 8+, 4+, 4-, 4X, 2X and 1X. In November 2021, I started the tryout process for the Provincial New Brunswick Team that would compete at Canada Games in August 2022. The Canada Games is a national event. The tryout process consisted of three 2000M ergometer tests, winter erg training, spring on-water rowing and a final selection trials in June 2022. I made the team! I started training 6 days a week, mostly in 8+, 4- and 2-. In preparation for Canada Games, we competed at the Nova Scotia Sprints and ERA Regatta in Montreal, QC. The Canada Games was an amazing experience, competing against athletes from all over Canada. I raced in the 8+ and 4-. Our 8+ finished with a personal best time of 6:53:58.
This past summer I was the Learn to Row coach at our rowing club. With another coach, we would train novice rowers the basics of rowing. The athletes were 13+ and we would take them out in 4+, 4X, 2X and 1X. The other coach and I were also responsible for organizing the clubhouse, loading and unloading the boat trailer for regattas, cleaning the insides of the boats and minor maintenance around the clubhouse. This was a fun and positive experience.
When I graduate from high school, I plan to attend university and am interested in taking Engineering. I would also like to continue my rowing career while at university. I like sweeping and would enjoy rowing in 8+, 4+ and 2-. I have applied to universities in Ontario and Nova Scotia. I would also be interested in applying to universities in the United States.
I would be a good candidate for your university and rowing program because I am a committed student athlete. I work hard! I have been able to maintain a high honours average, while also competing in school sports at the varsity level and rowing at the national level. I am able to manage my time and prioritize my work to ensure I complete all of my assignments on time and attend all of my sport's practices and games. I have a positive attitude, am a tough competitor and a good team player. I would be an asset to your university and rowing program.
I have Reference Letters from two of my rowing coaches, one of my teachers and one of my employers. These letters are available upon request.
