My name is Paige Whitley and I am in the eleventh grade (Class of 2023) and I am a coxswain for my school, Mainland Regional High School in Linwood, New Jersey. I am 16 years old, 5’3’’, and 110 lbs.
I fell in love with rowing after having sculled with my grandfather in a double, a master's rower, every Sunday morning for the last three years. I was able to develop a unique understanding of the stroke and used that knowledge to my advantage when I decided to begin my journey as a coxswain my freshmen year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my novice spring season was canceled and I was limited to how much I could grow; despite this, I continued to research and watch videos to improve my technical eye. Through this self-discipline, I learned the art of coxswaining.
This fall was my third season as a coxswain and my second season racing on Varsity. Prior to this year, I coxed the V4+ all throughout the spring, winning in regional competitions as well as advancing through the quarter and semifinals to make petite finals at the SRAA Nationals (Scholastic Rowing Association of America). Over the summer, I attended the US Rowing Olympic Development Program in Jacksonville, Florida where I was taught by nationally recognized coaches and grew tremendously as a person and as a coxswain. I learned everything from docking to steering, commands, and tone, to racing, and technical calls. It was truly one of the most incredible and advantageous experiences.
Unfortunately, my sophomore fall season was canceled due to the pandemic, but I was really excited this season to attend my first head races! One of my favorites was the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta where I coxed the Men’s Masters Eight (40-49 yrs) and placed second. This was an amazing accomplishment for me because I raced against some of the most respected and well-versed athletes in the nation. I was honored and humbled to coxswain these men. Rowing with a Master's crew proved my dedication to this sport, taking opportunities out of my comfort zone to achieve next-level victories and advancing my skills with each race. I learned a lot from steering a difficult course and coxswaining those who could only make me better.
I have taken all honors courses throughout my high school career, and I am currently enrolled in three AP classes, all of which I am registered to take the AP Exam in May. I am planning to take the SAT in the spring and provide you with a score. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA since my freshman year. I am in several clubs including Student Council, Key Club, Book Club, Future Science Professionals, and the National Honor Society. I push myself to take classes that I will not only excel in but those in which I am equally challenged.
