Last school year, a rowing team came to my school to gain exposure for their team. I initially thought, "what even is this sport", but I gave it a try because it seemed interesting. I did learn to row camp this past summer and fell in love with rowing. So, I continued with it by joining the team.
I've never felt a part of a team like I do with my rowing team. We all work so well with each other and it's taught me a lot about the aspects of teamwork and what I can do to apply myself within my team. Over the fall season, I did row most of it, but at the last two regattas, my coach put me as the coxswain for my boats because she thought I had a coxing presence. My initial time coxing, only if the needed fill-ins, I hit the shore and kept having to stop the boat multiple times to get back on track. But, I decided to give it another try at the regattas. And it went great.
That's when I finally found my calling on this team. I've always had this sense of leadership within a group of people where I want to take initiative and get my points across so being their coxswain was a perfect fit. I love the feeling of encouraging and getting my boat through that finish line at regattas. My biggest victory while being a coxswain is leading two of my boats to first-place victories.
I believe that I have the work ethic, leadership skills, and determination to be a coxswain for a college team. I know I have what it takes!
