Personal Statement

Hello! My name is Micah Gibbons and I am a Senior, Class of 2015, at Metro Christian Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. First and foremost, I am a passionate athlete with a strong competitive desire to win. I began rowing for Tulsa Youth Rowing Association, in the fall of my junior year. I genuinely love every aspect about the sport of rowing. The team bond and friendships I have made through rowing are irreplaceable. The physically challenging effort of putting in six days a week to be successful makes the end of every race worth it. The mental aspect of the sport of keeping a pace when I am stroking, or pulling not only as hard as I can but with the correct form is a challenge but so rewarding when all my hard work pays off.

Previous to rowing, I ran cross country freshman and sophomore year. Personally I came in 16th at State my freshman year, Metro Varsity Girls brought home the 4A State Champion Trophy. Sophomore year I came in 25th place and we brought home the 5A State Champion Trophy. Running, like rowing, is very challenging mentally and physically. With the help of my coach and my coachable attitude I became a great runner.

Also aside from rowing and cross country, basketball has been a primary sport in my life. I started on varsity freshman, sophomore, and junior year of high school. I love seeing my work pay off during a game. Being the point guard, I was the leader of the team. With this leadership role, I had to prove myself as trustworthy, hardworking, selfless, and leading by example. Throughout this role I had to call out plays based on reading what the defense was running and do whatever coach asked me to. Even though I could very well play my senior year and be successful through basketball, I have decided to focus on rowing for my true aspiration is to be a collegiate athlete in crew.

Sports have been a major role in my life; however, I know academics come first. I have learned how to prioritize my schoolwork vs. practices vs. friends and family. It takes hard work to be focused on school while dedicated to row in college, especially when other students use senior year to have fun. This self-discipline and dedication is key to being successful to obtain my goals.

For the start of my second year, I have come a long way. Out of the four 2K tests I have done, my fastest so far is an 8:04. I am pursuing a 7:40 this fall. I am also a very versatile rower with the ability to row stroke, port side, starboard side, and to scull. With as hard a worker as I am, and as coachable, and knowing how I have succeeded in the past with other sports, I have no doubt I will be a successful collegiate rower. Knowing there is potential, I am excited to see the results of my continuous effort.

Apart from sports, I am also involved at school. Clubs I am involved in include; Spanish Club, Key Club, Choir, National Honors Society, STUCO and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. These organizations allow me to serve others, something I love to do, as well as spend time with my fellow classmates. As a student, I have been successful in the class room as well. I currently have a 3.86 GPA with a 4.14 weighted. My ACT score is currently at a 25 and hopefully will rise after the September or October test. I have a rigorous class schedule including honors classes such as AP Bio and Honors Trig/ Pre Calc. Previous honor courses I have taken are Pre-AP English I and II, Honors Geometry, Pre-AP Biology, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Anatomy/ Physiology. I have worked hard throughout high school and plan to continue to be successful on into college.

As an individual I am outgoing, social, hardworking, coachable, passionate, and competitive. With these attributes, I am a good steward and athlete. Rowing is a passion of mine, through my hard work and competitive nature success will come throughout this year and years to come.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my personal statement!
