Hello! I'm Greta Slaats. I row with Beaver Creek Sculling in the Fall season and Western Albemarle H.S. Crew in the Spring season. I started rowing in the summer of 2019 and have been dedicated to the sport ever since. My goal is to continue rowing for as long as I can. Rowing in college will help me continue this goal while improving me as a person and helping me be a part of a competitive, supportive, and tight-knit community. Rowing has helped me become more confident, driven, and strong, both physically and mentally. I hope to find a college program that can help me grow further as an athlete, student, and human being.
I am extremely supportive of my teammates, whether it is screaming encouragement from the sidelines until I lose my voice or teaching novices the ropes of the team. At regattas, I often take on the responsibility of organizing boat loading, launching boats, and cheering on boats crossing the finish line. Some of my favorite memories have also been from supporting other teams, congratulating them for a good race at the finish line or encouraging a boat that is falling behind from the others. I am mentally and physically tough on the water and on the erg. As a bow, I act as a cox in our sculling boats, usually yelling something along the lines of "drive it down", "last push", "you can do anything for 10 seconds", or calling a focus on certain parts of the stroke we are struggling with.
In school, I challenge myself with difficult courses, such as APs and Honors classes, with social science focused electives. I am in the Environmental Studies Academy within my high school, meaning I take 2 science classes each year. I am interested in majoring in something focused on the intersection of social sciences and environmental sciences. Outside of school and rowing, I work at Circa Antiques, co-owned by my mom and grandmother. I enjoy hiking, reading, thrifting, cooking, listening to podcasts and music, or lobbying for social and environmental justice.
