I first started playing soccer when I was 4-5 years old. I didn’t particularly like it, but my mom made me finish out the season and I came to love the sport. I have been playing every year since and enjoy it so much that I look for extra soccer activities to do in conjunction with my regular team program. One of my favorite activities is participating in day camps where there are young children and helping to teach them the game of soccer and good sportsmanship.
My current club team has had its struggles. When I first joined 4 years ago, we were the best team in our CSL division and moved up to the next level the next year. Our first year in this higher division was a bit tough and at the end of that season, all but 4 girls decided to leave the team. This led to a year of rebuilding and a very tough go of it in the division. However, we persevered, and in this past year we went undefeated and will be moving up a level next season. I could have left the team and looked for somewhere else to go, but I decided I wanted to stick it out; for my teammates, my coach and myself. I felt it was a good learning experience, a great way to work through the struggles and disappointments of losing, and I believe it made me a better player and teammate in the end.
I am now a freshman in high school and am playing at the varsity level. I consider this a great accomplishment as we are a Division I team that is consistently ranked in the top 10 in LA City section. The team usually goes far in playoffs, including a championship berth 2 years ago. It has been an exciting experience this year. Early in the season, I didn’t see a lot of playtime and that was hard for me since I was used to playing full games on my club team. But I knew it was important for me to continue to work hard and be a supportive teammate. As the season progressed, I earned more playtime and have become the leading player on my team for points with 14 goals and 8 assists in regular season play.
Academically, as a high school freshman I am still not sure what I would like to study in college. I know I want to go to college, but my interests, at the moment, are varied. I hope to be able to attend a college where I can play soccer and where I will receive an excellent education. I may follow a more generalized path in my studies initially, that is, of course, unless something in high school strikes me as “yes, I want to do that!”. Right now, my academic goals are to perform well in school so that it gives me more opportunities with regard to prospective colleges.
Where do I want to go to school? I don’t have a strong preference. I am open to going anywhere that has a competitive soccer program and good academics. While I am from Southern California, I have spent significant time on the east coast, so weather extremes are not a deterrence. I also am not opposed to attending a school that is far away.
