Personal Statement

Soccer has been my sport since I was 5 years old, and it just clicked that I was meant to play in college. I am very athletic, and I put 100% effort both on and off the field to achieve my goals. It helps that I am tall. At 5’ 8”, I can reach the high shots and still get down quickly to the lower 90 of the goal. Playing with my feet and out of the backfield allows me to control the flow of the game. Having served as Captain for several years, I strive to be the best, positive leader on and off the field. Encouraging others to work hard and give it everything, my actions back up by words because I am the first one on the field and last off. My goalie coach, Mike Potier, trains with me multiple days per week and is one of the best in the industry. It is an honor to work with someone that has trained Keepers like Tim Howard and Ashlyn Harris.

Academics have always been a priority, regardless of sports. "No A's, no soccer", is the mantra in our house. I strive to keep my grades as high as possible, so I can play the sport I love. The challenge of balancing both school and soccer is something I am not afraid to tackle. It has fueled my passion for hard work, which makes me successful.

I am in my Senior year and maintaining a 4.0 GPA with multiple AP Courses. This is an important year for me as I am researching colleges and teams. I know that I want to play, and that dream is something I will be working towards while finding a school that has a great pre-law or psychology program.

The Coaching Philosophy is to create a very competitive environment that will focus on player development and exposure to the collegiate process. In order to prepare for this goal, the coaching staff has outlined a number of College Showcase events to attend and classroom settings to discuss Academics. Players will be challenged in every aspect of Soccer; our goal is to play a very expansive and attacking style of soccer. Ball movement & speed of play will be a big part of the player’s expectations. The coaching staff will be looking for the players to be proficient in the following areas: Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological. Commitment, Accountability & understanding team concepts will be very important aspects of our player selection.

I greatly appreciate you attending and it is clear you are a great girl from a great family as you conducted yourself in a first-class manner throughout camp. Ok here comes your evaluation from what me and my coaches saw over the course of the day. The positives- Good 1 time passing Good long passing Good punts You are tough You are brave Hard worker Good attitude throughout the day. Coachable.

  • On behalf of the entire Florida Gulf Coast Women’s Soccer program, we want to thank you again for taking the time out of your busy schedule to attend our ID camp. We are very excited to finally be back on the field for both camps and recruiting. We hope you enjoyed the sessions and games, getting to know our FGCU players and staff, and being able to see the beautiful FGCU Campus. We were very impressed with the professionalism, work rate, and quality that was produced within our camp. As you continue to develop as a player, we hope that you can implement some of the coaching points that you received at camp into your home environment. Our ultimate mission for the Blankenship Elite ID Camps is to give you information that will help prepare you for the next level. As for your evaluation, we were very impressed with your work ethic, composure, and ability to get set in various angles. Having these skills as a goalkeeper are very important. We thought you were able to bring a lot of energy and continued to stay engaged throughout the entire day. We were impressed with your ability to put yourself in the right position when facing a shot from various anglers, therefore you turned generally “hard” shots into routine saves. As you continue to focus on your development, we would like you to concentrate on driving your step forward when diving and keeping your body behind the ball. By taking a forward step, you are more likely to make contact with the ball and generate more power to extend your dive. By keeping your hands and body behind the ball, it makes a huge difference by helping you hold the ball and lowers the chances of giving up any rebounds.

  • Skillset Overview Technical Abilities - 92 / 100 Hands - Great strong hands. Ball seems to stick on a save. Diving - Good technique and strength on diving plays. Covers good distance and gets extended reach. Tactical Abilities - 95 / 100 Communication - Great communicator; organizes and directs teammates well and communicates frequently. Group Play - Play was elevated in team activities. Great understanding of your roles and responsibilities within a team. Physical Abilities - 92 / 100 Strength - Did a good job handling challenges and played well shoulder-to-shoulder. Vertical Leap - Showed a good vertical. Great job challenging for balls in the air. Mental Abilities - 92 / 100 Leadership - Excellent job taking charge and leading the team. Great communicator and motivator. Coachable - Responds well to coaching. Asked good questions and seemed to enjoy the learning process. Coach's Comments Elizabeth had a great coachable attitude! I really enjoyed working with her she seemed like she was focused on listening and on learning her craft. Very impressive. In training she seemed very locked in and in between games when I could speak to her her attention to addressing her mistakes was wonderful and refreshing. Elizabeth got caught during a game being a little flat-footed she seem intent upon addressing it and really made a lot of corrections as the games progressed This is something as she grows she will become more explosive I would encourage her to work in the weight room a little as that will help. Certainly clearly talented just looking to give her an extra edge Elizabeth did a good job but I always think speed of thought is something that every Goalkeeper can work on this will certainly help that lowball situation as she will be more prepared when they make the decision to shoot just a great area for growth.

  • Letter of Recommendation for Collegiate Sports
  • 2/27/20 to 2/27/20
  • February 27, 2020 To Whom It May Concern, Please accept this letter of recommendation for Elizabeth Gathercole as she pursues to play soccer collegiately. I had the privilege of coaching Elizabeth this past season for the 2019 Junior Varsity team at Viera High School. In our time together, Elizabeth was an essential component to the success of our team. She held the main leadership responsibility of team captain. Beyond the starting role of goalkeeper, she contributed on the field as a forward. As a goalkeeper, she held a clean sheet the entire season and communicated effectively with her backline. While as a forward, she was the team’s fourth leading goal scorer with 7 goals. Beyond the field, Elizabeth has balanced the rigors of her sport and the academic demands of honor and AP courses, which can be noted with her GPA of 3.8/4.0. As a person, Elizabeth is respectful, dedicated and a team player. She brings a high energy to every practice and encourages her teammates to replicate the same intensity. I believe that her personal qualities, academic drive and determination, will allow her to be successful for any program at the next level. I am convinced Elizabeth Gathercole will be a perfect addition to your team’s success, as she was with mine. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Olivia Bergau Head Coach 2019 Viera JV High School Women’s Soccer Former Florida State Women’s Soccer Player and Professional Soccer Player
