Hi my name is Dani Grenon. I am currently the starting center back for both my club and high school team. When I was around the age of 11 my coach registered me to play up with the older girls . I knew that it would be challenging to earn a starting spot on that team but I still worked towards it. The girls on my team that I was up against for a starting spot in defense were beating me in height weight and speed. Even though I was at a disadvantage I still worked towards that starting spot. Finally all of that payed off and I was a part of the starting 11 on the field. When people find out that I am a center back they are surprised. They would have never thought that a girl that is 5'3 and around 130 Ibs would ever be able to be a center back. I tell them that I would be just as shocked if I were in your shoes but in reality height does not mean anything if you can head the ball and if you are smart with how you play. For my high school soccer team in the State Semi Quarter-Finals we played against one of the hardest teams in the state. The ending score turned out to be 2-1, my team won. Let me tell you about the first goal that was scored. It all started when we got a corner kick. While my teammate went to go set up to take the kick my coach screamed "DANI GET TO THE 18" so I got to the 18 yard box as fast as I could. Next thing you know my teammate takes the kick and I head that ball right into the back of the net. This was one of my favorite plays that has ever happened during my high school soccer experience. My high school soccer team ended going into the State Final Four where we played against the 7th team ranked in the nation. I went into this game ready. My high school team did a great job defending and attacking during this game. Then next thing you know two girls on my soccer team get 2 red cards so now we are down 2 players. Still 9 v11 we are holding the other team off from scoring. Sadly my team lost this game 2-0 we held them off until the last 5 minutes and then they got one goal from a cross and another one from an outside shot. It ended very sadly for us but in reality we did an amazing job keeping them out while playing down 2 players.
The excitement of playing for my high school can only get better by playing in college. I look forward to the opportunities of playing at the collegiate level. I love being part of a team that works at getting better together. Playing soccer at the collegiate level is a challenge I am prepared to experience.
