Personal Statement
I am a micro-ethnic, ambidextrous, right-left hemisphere thinking “artsy jock”. This cultural background and natural character together support my dual passions for art and sports. I see myself as a developing artistic designer as well as a keen sportsperson. In my experience, this combination is extremely unusual; almost everyone that I know falls clearly into one “camp” or the other. In my case, though I have earned accolades as both “Best Artist” and “Most Outstanding Player” in every year that I have been in high school.
My choosing to call myself an artist arises from the fact that I express myself much more effectively through images than by using words – verbalized or written. Working on my art has been the best way for me to elevate and brighten my moods. I also believe that it can serve to help bring at least moments of happiness to others as well. The phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” may be the most common one said in relation to communications. It remains very true, however, and “speaks” to me especially poignantly because I think of myself as being primarily visual-oriented. Therefore, I have the highest possible appreciation for the remarkable insight of the person that came up with this saying.
In at least equal measure, I also view myself as an athlete. My special interests are soccer and basketball, with the former being a clear first choice. To maximize the challenge to me I often train with, and play against, boys. In addition to this, I enjoy all other forms of physical activity and do not take long to excel in my context at whichever sport I attempt. As with my art, I find that exercising makes me happier and serves as an excellent stress reliever. Hence, my expectation is that playing sports and keeping up with fitness will also be lifelong pastimes for me.
Having a dual nature involving two very different talents has made it easy for me to make friends and connect to people with very diverse talents and viewpoints. I hope to build on this during my college years, and learn as much as possible from many different distinguished faculty members, coaches, and talented fellow students. Starting from the foundation of my profile “as is”, this will enable me to achieve my full potential as a creative designer-athlete.
