Personal Statement
As a child, I cherished the times I gazed at constellations with my busy doctor dad, our fleeting moments beneath the stars. He used to say constellations were like roads, sometimes looping back, other times branching out. They were groups of big and small, bright and dim stars, all forming a unique pattern. Since then, I developed the belief that my life resembled a constellation, with each star representing a pivotal life moment that would mold and define me.
My first star emerged when my family and I relocated to Mexico when I was two years old to support my dad’s studies. For three years, we embraced life in a new country, where my parents, young and with limited resources, started from scratch. My dad tirelessly supported our education, meals, and rent, while my mom balanced work, caregiving, and household chores. Despite not having much, my parents' determination taught me the importance of hard work and the value of loved ones over material wealth.
The next star brightened when we returned to Nicaragua three years after living in Mexico. However, I experienced culture shock as everything changed: the local pronunciation of words, the transition to a new school, and even the dynamics of our family size. Everything was new, and despite an initial adjustment period, I embraced the changes. Temporarily, we resided at my maternal grandparent's and uncle's house. My sister and I were raised alongside my mother's two younger brothers, our bond resembling that of siblings. Such childhood adaptations shaped who I am today. I developed the ability to adapt quickly and find positivity in various situations. I enrolled in a religious school, an unfamiliar setting, yet adapting came effortlessly. The teaching style varied, but it posed no significant challenge.
Two years into our return to Nicaragua, our school changed. My parents opted for a more liberal school, less rigid regarding religious matters or beliefs. I enrolled in an institution that significantly shaped my childhood and a portion of my adolescence. The teaching system was different; it was difficult to adapt initially, but I gradually grew accustomed to it. I delved into European history, and I learned German. Despite German pronunciation and verb conjugation challenges, I mastered the language with practice and determination. This life moment marked a significant transformation, earning its place as my third star.
Isn't it curious how change can come out of nowhere, even when everything seems perfect and in its proper place? That happened to me in 2018; a sociopolitical event unfolded in Nicaragua that left people without work, families, and, tragically, loss of life. Due to this dangerous situation, I had to leave my country again for three months. During that time, I closely followed the news, seeing how government actions turned peaceful marches into violent events, all while hoping my family remained safe. Upon my return, I switched schools again because of the danger of the situation in the country. Also, my parents wanted me to improve my English, and they wanted to face new challenges. Initially hesitant about the change, I eventually connected with individuals who have become essential in my life. This experience taught me that change, even when resisted, can bring positive outcomes. This particular life chapter stands as one of my most radiant stars.
My current star is still in the process of formation. Over the past four years, I've undergone significant changes, facing various challenges that have fostered my growth and contributed to shaping who I am today. Playing on the school soccer team has improved my discipline and taught me the importance of passion, perseverance, and dedication in pursuing what I love. My fourth star is nearing completion, yet I still have to work more to shape it entirely.
As I look ahead, the path to college will be my next guiding star. Though the exact path remains uncertain, my journey will be marked with uniqueness, my ongoing passion for learning, and the pursuit of my individuality.
