Personal Statement
From an academic and social perspective, my focus to date has been sport related. This is an area where I have excelled in at both GCSE and A Level, which consequently led me to study Sport and Physical Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University. I am currently a third-year student and an area of interest which stood out to me in my chosen modules was psychology in relation to sport. During my second year, psychology allowed me to explore areas ranging from psychological theories that are concerned with exercise such as the Self-efficacy theory which was produced by Bandura to motivation in sport which highlighted the Basic needs theory. Continuing my interest for the subject in my third year, what fascinated me the most was injuries within sport from a psychological perspective.
This topic area showed great curiosity towards me, that it resulted in being the subject area for my dissertation. My dissertation study highlights the relationship between confidence levels and re-injury anxiety levels for an Injured athlete during the rehabilitation phase.
Prior to my degree, I successfully studied Physical Education, History and Geography. During this period, I also completed BTEC Work Skills and Financial Maths, demonstrating that I am more than capable to complete enrichment subjects as well as my chosen A-levels. Whilst studying Physical Education, it gained me the opportunity to develop and demonstrate my communication and leadership skills as I was required to take many coaching sessions, which was also required in my university course. Both at A-level and my degree course required many pieces of course work, which highlights my capability for independent research and demonstrates that I can complete any activity to a high standard within the time allocated, proving that I am a dedicated student who works in an organised manner.
Besides my academic studies, I have had the honour to have been chosen to play for Cardiff City Ladies Football Club for my third season who play in the English Premier League. In addition, whilst playing for CCLFC I have been presented with players player and managers player of 2016-2017 season. Prior to CCLFC, I also played for Cardiff City Women’s who play in the Welsh Premier League for three seasons. Also, to my credit I have represented South Wales Girls Football Team for two previous seasons. This shows my strength as a team player, overall ability and the skills I possess in my chosen sport and more importantly my passion for the game. Although I have strong passion and commitment towards football, I am also interested in many other sports. Throughout my high school career, I have had the opportunity to complete a life guarding course and become captain of my school netball team which again shows great strength in my communication and leadership skills. Furthermore, I have also had the opportunity to represent my school for 200m, 800m, long jump and javelin at athletics camps on numerous occasions.
Although I am very active in sport, I am aware of the need to pursue my academic studies and therefore I ensure that sport does not have a detrimental effect on them. I am a well-rounded individual and my other hobbies include travelling, reading and photography. Throughout sixth form, I was an active member for the school parliament, which demonstrates my interest in improvement, equality and fairness for all pupils. During year 11, I had the opportunity to take part in work experience with Legal & general Insurance Company. During the week, I took part in various role plays capturing sensitive medical information from customers using all type of data collecting methods. At the end of the week I was awarded praise and compliments on my maturity in an office environment and that I could successfully complete all given tasks and unexpected errands. In addition, I have also completed countless hours of work experience throughout sixth form and university in a teaching role in schools. I have also undertaken voluntary work as a Youth Worker at local Youth clubs for 11-16 year olds and have worked for local charities collecting donations during international Rugby Matches.
To conclude, I believe that although this journey will involve demanding challenges, I know I have the ambition and drive and tenacity to ensure that I succeed not only on the course itself but on the pitch, in my subsequent employment and future career.
