Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Avril Quiroga. I am an attacking and defensive midfielder with five years of Varsity soccer experience. I was born in Buenos Aires; at four years old my family migrated to the Dominican Republic leaving my family and moving to a new country was difficult to adapt to. Soccer has always been a part of my life. Ever since I could walk, I played in the park with my father, which I always enjoyed. It was how I created my first friendships. Within the time I adapted to the culture and made more friends by playing this beautiful game. I had always tried other sports like volleyball, tennis, swimming, but nothing compared to the value and love I had towards soccer.
I started playing at Barca Academy, a soccer summer camp where I realized it was a sport I truly wanted to pursue. I stayed in this Academy for four years until I got selected to play In Barcelona. This is the biggest international tournament of the club, and being the only girl playing in a boys category at only 12 years old was intimidating. Yet, these allowed me to gain experiences, new friendships, and enjoy soccer while in Europe.
Playing in La Masia, where my greatest idol Leonel Messi played when he was about my age, couldn't be more inspiring. I continued playing until in 8th I got selected to play on the girl's varsity soccer team. Moreover, participating in tournaments at such young age had taught me the value of responsibility, commitment, and discipline.
An important skill I learned was the value of friendships, good communication, and social skills. I had formed with people of different ages, and cultures. Through my soccer journey, I created lasting friendships from all parts of the world because of this beautiful sport.
As a student soccer athlete, I am searching for a program that is well suited to me, academically, and athletically. I believe that my skills and character will have a positive impact on your team.
