Personal Statement
I am Lucie-Marie Waddon and I am 16 years old. I live in the South West of England and am currently studying AS levels in English Literature, Geography and PE. I attended a state school until I was 14 and was then fortunate enough to be awarded a full sports scholarship at King's College in Taunton which is recognised as being the leading college in independent soccer in the country.
I would describe myself as hard working, dedicated and committed. I am dedicated to my studies and equally dedicated to my sport. I believe I am able to find the right balance between the two. My primary sport is soccer but I also play 1st team field hockey, 1st team indoor hockey and 1st team cricket and also enjoy tennis and basketball. I attach a record of my achievements in soccer but I have also reached a high standard in field hockey as a goal keeper. I have been selected for my County 3 years in a row and had a Tier 1 England Trial last season and working towards this level again this season.
I give 100% to everything I do. I strive to be the best that I can be and take on board everything that my coaches tell me. Last summer I trained every day and kept a detailed diet and training diary to attend a Great Britain Bobsleigh U18 trial. I was selected into the squad and only missed out on attending the Youth Olympics by 1 place to girls, who at the time, were ranked 1,2 and 3 in the world. I had never been involved in bobsleigh before but was determined to achieve and this shows I am willing to take on new challenges, I am committed to training programmes and extremely coachable.
I recognise how fortunate I am to have been awarded a scholarship in such a prestigious college and I never take this for granted. I participate fully in school life and take part in many school activities other than sport to support the school; even taking on such challenges as inter-house masterchef and chess! I also tend to contribute in the floor debate of debating competitions and attend the English Society. I have also been put forward for prefect training in my school where a select 12 pupils and chosen by the headmaster to be recognised role models for younger pupils which brings us much responsibility.
The decision to apply to America has been a huge decision but a challenge I am 100% sure I want to take up and am sure I will rise to and is something I am extremely excited about. When I moved to my current school I had to leave all of my friends and knew no-one. I knew, however, that I would make friends easily, particularly through sport and that proved to be the case.
I pride myself on being a team player. I get more pleasure out of setting up a team mate with a goal rather than scoring myself. I work hard to achieve academically and I work hard at my sport. During school holidays I work at a retail stored called Next to raise money myself to fund my sports tours. In 2014 I raised money to go to Hong Kong and am currently saving to come to America on tour in October 2016. I am also actively engaged in fundraising activities for this tour.
I am also happy to do voluntary work. I have volunteered in the school chapel as a chapel server and have also read prayers during service. As well as this I coach primary school children to play soccer. This voluntary work will go towards my Duke of Edinburgh which is "the world's leading youth achievement award designed to push personal boundaries and gain new skills". I have achieved my Bronze award and am currently doing my Gold. I have also been a CCF army cadet for 2 years and after attending army camp I achieved the rank of Lance Corporal.
