Being offered the opportunity to play on the Cibola Girls Varsity Soccer Team was a huge accomplishment of mine as a freshman. They were state champions. However, the previous year I'd gotten ankle surgery for my torn ligaments which unfortunately I re-tore playing with the JV team. Seemingly I had to decline the offer awarded to me. I was completely distraught since I'd been working towards this offer for a year. I had to get a second ankle surgery in the winter to reattach the ligaments and fix the subtalar joint. Fortunately, the following club season I was awarded a spot on the top U18 team for my league, playing with girls three years older than me and earning a starting spot as a defender and captain.
I didn't allow these setbacks to effect my mentality. My teammates, family, friends, and coaches taught me that consistency was key, whether this dealt with my mentality or performance. They all helped me realize I had an amazing support group and community to back me up; I am more than ever appreciative of the sacrifice my parents make for me to play the sport I love and how privileged I am to have them in my life. Everyone in my life helped me to overcome my fear of getting injured again which made me see how important teamwork is as well as a focused mentality - whether its on or off the field. I know that I have the capability to ensure a role as a leader on your team!
