My name is Sydney (Syd) Kennedy and in September I am starting grade 10 at Halifax West High School. I completed my freshman year as a french immersion student at Lockview High in Fall River, Nova Scotia. I am a very focused, driven, and competitive individual who takes my academic success as seriously as my athletic achievements. I have always managed to balance a very demanding soccer, hockey, and dry land training schedule while maintaining the marks that earn me a spot on the honours roll at Lockview High. I am transferring high schools to be closer to my strength and conditioning and soccer training. I had the opportunity to represent Canada at the U15 CONCACAF tournament in Orlando Florida this summer and was recently awarded Soccer Nova Scotia's Youth Player of the Year.
Cancer research and raising money for cancer is important to me. I lost one of my best friends to cancer two years ago and since then I have been apart of a lot of things involving cancer. Whether it is raising money towards cancer research, touring labs that use fish to research Ewing's Sarcoma, or helping cook a meal for families that have to stay over night at Ronald McDonald house because they don't live close enough to our children's hospital. My friends and I have raised roughly $3500 and donated it to the Oncology Department at the IWK. This has made me think more about a career in cancer research in the future.
I was recently selected on the 18 player roster to represent Canada at the U15 CONCACAF tournament in Orlando where I scored 6 goals and started all but the first game. We lost 2-0 to the US in the final. I was selected at 13 to take part in the Regional Excelarated Program (REX/EXCEL) created by the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) Women's program. "The women's EXCEL Program is built around international best practices to move past the challenges our system has faced in the past. It provides a clear and continuous road map for our country's most promising players from the moment they enter the Regional EXCEL Centre, progress into the National EXCEL system, are targeted for EXELeration activity, and then called into the Women's National Team program." I am also currently a member of our U16 provincial team as an under ager and was selected into the provincial program at 13. My club team, for the second year in a row, won our provincial championships and I am heading to Lethbridge Alberta to compete at the U16 Sport Chek Nationals from October 4-10.
I am a dynamic, creative player that loves to attack, score, and win. I have won the scoring title for the past four of six seasons. Creativity is a big part of my game. I am not afraid to try double scissors, bicycle kicks, maradonas, and scoop passes in a game. I love to go one on one and set up the perfect play. I consider myself to be a very proactive player on and off the ball and a leader on and off the field. I was a captain this year although I was still just a first year in the age group.
Aside from soccer I have played on my U15/U16 provincial hockey team since I was 12 and competed in and won a national hockey skills competition at 10 years old. I competed in 14 cross country races prior to junior high and was undefeated in my school district. I am an outgoing passionate person who loves to train, get better, and win and I want to play at the highest level with great players and great coaches!
