Soccer has been a part of my life since I was in Kindergarten, and my love of the sport has never wavered. For nine years before joining my current club team, I played on a “glorified rec team,” as we were known by some of our competitors. Though I began my soccer career as a field player, I quickly took on the position of goalkeeper. As the only member of the team who played all nine years, I became a leader on the team during games and practices. I led by example by always giving one hundred percent at practices, and, in games, I was a leader as I could see the whole field and was able to direct players on all elements of the game. As a team we always sought to challenge ourselves, frequently playing teams of a higher caliber than us, which made us a better team after every game.
After my eighth-grade year, I entered the realm of club soccer by trying out for my current team. I am the youngest player on the team and joined it not knowing any of the other players, which provided a whole new set of challenges for me. I had to quickly earn the trust of my teammates and learn to trust them and my new coach to help ensure the overall success of the team. I have grown even more as a leader on this team by showing my commitment and grit on the field. Moving into club soccer has helped me take and implement advice from others, and, after every game, I study video of myself to find areas in which I can improve. As a result, my skills have improved astronomically in the two years I have been on this team. This experience has taught me to continually push myself in pursuit of a higher level of soccer. It has also caused me to recognize that it is in my nature to seek out and thrive on challenges both physically and academically. This is why I am looking for an athletically and academically challenging experience in college.
