Before joining my first rec soccer team, I had played many sports but hadn’t truly connected with any as an athlete. Soccer gives me the ability to push myself to be a leader, creator, teammate, and athlete like I had never experienced before. I didn’t become a goalkeeper until trying out for my second club team, where they told me I had more potential in goal after seeing me block some of my friends shots for fun. They were right. By being in goal I am able to show my athleticism in a new way that a field player can’t. I can show my explosive speed, strength, and agility, as well as my communication skills and strong field sense that helps my teammates shut down offensive attacks.
As a goalkeeper one of my strengths is my ability to remain calm under pressure and perform my best even in an important game. I was able to show this steadfastness at my annual Seminary Hill Cup game where my school battles the girls of our rival school to rack up points and win the prizes Seminary Hill Cup. With a backwards leap to the crossbar I cast the ball away from the goal in one of the most exhilarating saves of my career. I closed the game with a clean sheet, and enormous pride in our accomplishments as a team. This is why I am so drawn to my position as goalkeeper. I have the opportunity to make or break a game with one calculated dive or punt.
I am not only looking for a athletic challenge, but academic rigors as well; I need to show my leadership skills in business school where I can pursue my dream of being a residential developer. I can’t envision my days without soccer in college, so I am looking for an environment where I can show my drive for success on the pitch as well as the classroom.
