Hi my name is Avery Tomlinson! I'm 16 years old, from Castle Pines, Colorado. I am going into my senior year at Rock Canyon High School, where I have swam on their varsity team since my freshman year. I have been in the water since I was little. Joining a summer swim team at the age of 6 was one of the best decisions of my life. Since that day I have loved swimming and being in the water. Swimming has always felt natural to me, and now is such a huge part of my life, I'm not sure I could go without it! I currently swim for CAC (Colorado Athletic Club) in Inverness, CO. I have been on multiple club teams and have grown as a swimmer, and I feel like joining CAC has been a great fit for me. Having a good relationship with my teammates and especially my coaches is a huge factor in swimming for me, and joining CAC I immediately felt connected. I value my relationships with those on my team and hope to be able to have these good relationships as a college swimmer. I like to think that I am a people person, so these relationships are a key part of who I am.
Some of my goals are to keep improving on being a good teammate and mentor. For the past 4 summers, I have been a summer swim coach. It is the best time of year! I love helping children just starting to swim, improve, and have their love for the water grow. I think that having an impact on the future athletes/swimmers of America is insanely important, and also helps me grow as a person, a leader, and as a swimmer. Another goal of mine personally is to make the Senior Zones time cuts for the California meet in July. With competitive training, hard work at practices, and consistently swimming in meets, I know I have a strong chance of improving my times and making those cuts. Something unique about me is that I love getting feedback. I have never shied away from asking for help, feedback, different points of view, etc. I will always ask coaches and peers for ways to improve, not just in swimming, but in school as well. Self advocacy is such an important lifelong skill and something I continually work on to improve myself as both a student and an athlete.
Academics are very important to me. I have high expectations and big goals for my future. I have maintained a GPA of 3.76, taken difficult classes including both honors and AP, and I have been involved in the school. I recently was inducted into the National Social Studies Honor Society as I have maintained a 4.0 in my social studies classes. I love to attend school events, help with fundraisers and volunteer. My favorite things to volunteer with are children's events. I have helped out at numerous elementary school events, painting faces for Halloween, helping with a kickball tournament, and cleaning up after school dances. The classes I have taken throughout my time in high school have all been aimed towards a certain subject, science. My dream is to major in biology and chemistry, and hopefully go into a field of forensic science. My goal for forensics and academics is that it will lead me to an internship with the FBI and a career in it.
One of the best parts of my life is the relationships I have made coaching. I coach summer swim as well as this year I took on the job of coaching 2 soccer teams, ages 7/8 and tots (3/4). This was a great experience for me and helped me realize my love for sports. My main goal of coaching besides helping the children improve, was to make sure the children had a good experience and grew to love the sport. Growing up I was a multi-sport athlete, which I think has really helped me keep my love for swimming and sports in general. I was a competitive basketball and soccer player, as well as ran track and field in middle school. Athletics are a huge part of my life and I will be overjoyed with the opportunity to continue my swim journey throughout college.
