Growing up on an island in the Florida Keys, swimming has been a major part of my life since I was a young child. Whether it was in the ocean or in the pool, I loved to spend time swimming. When my parents noticed my admiration for swimming, I joined the Florida Keys Swim Club and started competing at only five years old, and I have not stopped since. My love for competing in the pool has only grown since I competed for the first time 11 years ago.
Because I live in such a quaint tourist town, the swim team I have been a part of has always remained fairly small. The team currently consists of only five of us who train and compete together. I cherish my teammates, as we support each other while pushing one another to our full potential.
I consider where I live something that makes me unique from from other athletes because my circumstances are different from the typical teenager in high school. Being surrounded by the ocean has given me more opportunities in school and in swimming. For example, I have been able to swim to raise money for restoring the Alligator Light House four miles off the coast of my small town. I have competed and volunteered in this event over the past few years and will be competing again this September 2023. The eight mile swim to and from the lighthouse allows me to use my ability to give back to the ocean and my community. In addition, this school year I will be taking a part in the Coral Reef Restoration Foundation where my classmates and I will plant coral on our reefs to help stop the effects of coral bleaching. These experiences have driven me to be the best human I can be and to use my ability for more than just inside the pool.
My academics have always remained very important to me. I enjoy learning and challenging myself in all subjects. Every year, I enroll in mostly Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes that challenge me daily and help me grow and learn. My hard work and dedication has earned me a place in the top ten percent in my class. I have maintained straight A’s throughout my high school career thus far and I will strive to continue to do so for my remaining time in high school and upcoming college years.
Looking to the future, I hope to continue improving my times and competing not only against my competitors, but against myself. I would love to be able to contribute all my hard work and dedication to a college swim team in the near future.
I appreciate your time for reading this and it would be greatly appreciated if you reached out to me!
