Personal Statement

Hello Coaches! My name is Susan Stelmar and I am a Junior at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, Illinois.
I started swimming at age eight with the Lincoln-Way Gators Swim Association. In the 2010/2011 winter season, I was part of 400 freestyle relay that placed first in the Illinois Age Group State Finals. Placing first in the relay for the Lincoln-Way Gators Swimming Association was a great achievement!  It was the first time in Gator history that a relay placed first in the entire state. My 400 medley relay also placed 2nd in State the night before and achieved the National Age Group Award in 9th place. I also achieved a Central Zone cut as a fourteen year old in the 50 freestyle LCM.
I started my Freshman year as a Varsity team member and went to State as an alternate for the medley relay. In my Sophomore year, my relay set a new pool record in the 200 medley and won sectionals against our rivals, Lincoln-Way North High School. This year Lincoln-Way East  won sectionals and broke the Homewood Flossmoor 200 medley relay pool record, achieving a state time. I swam the 50 free in the relay and my split was a 24.37. Individually, I  won the 100 freestyle and qualified for state. I came in second place in the 50 freestyle and know I will qualify next year as a senior in the 50 yard free.
I am open to colleges across the country that will allow me to balance academics and swimming. The schools I am most interested have a small to medium sized student body. I am planning to major in Secondary Education and English. I am an avid reader and writer. I also am an artist who enjoys drawing. Many of my drawings have been exhibited in art shows since my freshman year.
