Personal Statement
Hi, I’m Urvi. I specialise in 100/50 meter Backstroke along with 50 meter Freestyle.
From the early days of toddlerhood at Acarath Academy, Schaumburg, Illinois, USA where basketball, soccer, gymnastics, and swimming were my playground, to the rich tapestry of activities after moving to India, my life has been a series of athletic adventures and lately, academic pursuits too. The waters of opportunity led me to the artistry of ballet, traditional Indian dances such as Kathak and Odissi, the discipline of taekwondo and judo, the breathtaking speed of skating, and the grace of badminton. Still, it was in the fluidity of swimming that I found my true calling.
At the age of 11, I transitioned from competitive skating to competitive swimming, propelled by an enduring love for the water.
Swimming, to me, is more than a sport; it is a way of life that has shaped my discipline, perseverance, and resilience. From the first time I entered the pool as a competitive swimmer, the rhythmic strokes became a metaphor for my approach to life—fluidity in the face of challenges, precision in navigating obstacles, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Despite facing a hiatus of 24 months due to my move to Residential school owing to family circumstances, and the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, I returned to the pool with renewed vigor in September 2021. Daily training and gym sessions became my rhythm, and within eight months, I proudly qualified for the State tournament in India.
Along with home-schooling (more of self-schooling for me) and the rigor of athletic training, I have found time to give back to the community. Volunteer work at animal rescue shelters has been a rewarding experience, in addition to caring for the strays around our residence, highlighting my commitment to compassion and empathy.
My journey has been marked by a medical ailment, family turbulence, general instability, and academic challenges (moving from one alternative school to another). However, these hurdles have been the crucible in which my resilience, maturity, and tolerance have been forged. I am not only passionate about swimming but also vocal about global issues, and I study global humanitarian and animal plights. Math and Physics captivate me as much as the waters of the swimming pool.
In addition to my pursuits, I love singing and painting, having briefly engaged in vocal and art classes. These varied interests reflect the multifaceted nature of my personality.
I am confident that an opportunity to join my dream school's Swim Team will not only provide me with a pathway to hone my skills further, but also surround me with like-minded individuals who share a passion for the water. I understand the commitment required to be a part of a collegiate team, and I am ready to invest my time, energy, and determination to contribute positively to the collective spirit.
As a student-athlete, I am learning the importance of time management, teamwork, and leadership. These skills extend beyond the pool, influencing my academic pursuits and personal growth. I believe that being a part of the collegiate swim team will not only enhance my athletic abilities but also foster a sense of discipline and sportsmanship that will last a lifetime.
As I navigate the currents of life, I am propelled by a determination to continue overcoming challenges, improve my swim timings, and in future contribute meaningfully to the field of computational sciences.
In addition to my dedication to the sport, I bring a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. I am eager to immerse in a new culture, learn from experienced swimmers, absorb the wisdom of the coaching staff, and, most importantly, foster connections that extend beyond the confines of the swimming pool.
Thank you for the opportunity to narrate my story. I look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead.
