Personal Statement
I am Nischka Nanayakkara, currently a Senior at my High School Ladies' College, Colombo 7.
Having been scouted at my KG swim meet when I was 7 years old, I was included in the school junior swim squad. I first competed at the Sri Lanka Schools' All Island Age Group Swimming Championship in 2015 when I was 9 years old and have been representing school ever since at all Provincial and National swimming meets.
I have been privately coached by Manoj Abeysinghe at SwimAmerica Sri Lanka and then at Killer Whale Aquatics (KWA) where I swam from 2012 until 2022. I am currently training at school with Coach Kanishka Fernando, former swimmer and waterpolo player.
I am currently the Captain of the Ladies' College Swimming Team. In both 2022 and 2023, our team at Ladies' College won the Under 18 Championship and in 2024 under my Captaincy, we emerged overall Girls’ Champions at the Sri Lanka Schools' All Island Age Group Swimming Championship after 24 years, which was a significant achievement in my career. For my timing of 29.73 in the 50 free event at the National Swimming Championship in 2022, I was selected for a coaching clinic with international coach Chris Martin held Sri Lanka in April 2023.
Besides swimming I am also an Artistic Swimmer due to my background in gymnastics and dance together with swimming. I am also the Captain of the school Artistic Swimming team for the year 2024. Representing Sri Lanka at the Singapore Open Artistic Swimming Championship in November this year, I am thrilled to say that I won Gold in Junior (15-19) Solo Tech and Solo Free events. I also represented Sri Lanka in Artistic Swimming and placed 5th at the Asian Age Group Championship held in the Philippines in February 2024.
Sport has always been my passion and in fact I would like to follow a course of study in Sports Science or Sports Management in College. Having attended two dance camps (Dance Excellence) in Los Angeles in 2017 and 2019, I developed an interest in studying in the United States, therefore I would be grateful for an opportunity and assistance to pursue my studies in the US.
