Personal Statement
Almost every child in junior school wants to grow up to be a Doctor, Pilot, Nurse, Engineer, Lawyer, Teacher or any such career that is easy to pronounce and I was no exception. Fortunately for me I realized earlier on in life that whatever I was heading to involved sports. I was exceptional at sports from a young age and winning my first Victrix Ledorum at age 6 years I was set on my path.
However, by age 15, most of my pears in the sporting fraternity were dropping out either due to pressure but mostly due to injuries. By the time I was 16 I had suffered with my fair share of muscle and tissue injuries from the various sports I participated in. I experienced my fair share of visits to the physiotherapists, acupuncturists, biokeneticist and sports doctors to an extent where i ended up self diagnosing and learning to try and heal myself albeit with some failures along the way.
When it came to choosing my AS and A level subjects, it was based upon my preference which ended up in the combination of biology, chemistry and physical education. All 3 of these subjects bring skills I would require in order to complete a degree in the above fields more so in the field of physiotherapy. I felt Biology brought practical and problem-solving skills. In Biology coordination was my favorite topic. Chemistry taught me planning and analytical techniques . Practicals in the AS level were always my favorite as I learn best hands on and visually . Physical education was my favorite subjects because i was already a sports person. I was intrigued by the incredible muscle functions and the way the body regenerates energy to atp and works in pairs to produce movements within my sports.
The light bulb become clearer during my rotator cuff impingement injury a year ago . I underwent multiple sessions of physiotherapy and within each one my physiotherapist used a different method to try and maximize healing. After each session I would research what technique is best for the injury and how it works. The physiotherapist showed me how and why certain procedures were done.
Physiotherapy offers the chance of restoring movement of those injured to allow them to operate at full range of motion . At a certain point in my life, I found my love for sports deteriorating. This was mainly because of the many muscle issues related to swimming and waterpolo. Only after I met a physiotherapist who I felt was the embodiment of a sports person, did I feel my passion for sport stat to spark again. I want to be able to bring about the same positive experience I had to the people who are losing hope with their injuries like I was . Physiotherapy is something I believe I’m suitable for as i will be able to help other sports people in my country. Most of our Physiotherapists do not have first hand experience especially when dealing with sports injuries.
Having played various sports all my life, a little bit of tennis, athletics, cross country, hockey, waterpolo and swimming. Team sports such as hockey and water polo are my favorite. I have represented my school first team in these sports, my country at the highest level in hockey, water polo and swimming. I received the senior sports woman of the year award in my upper 6 year at the academy .I was captain for the First Team waterpolo team in 2022 and for the Zimbabwe swimming team that travelled recently for the African region 5 games held in Malawi in 2022. I played in the Zimbabwe water polo team in the 2020 Olympic qualifiers as the youngest member of that team. I received full water polo and swimming colors at IGCSE level. I swam at two region 5 games and the junior African games in Tunis, Tunisia in 2020. Participation in all of this was helpful because it has taught me how to work with many different people in various teams and difficult environments. I have also learnt to be a leader even in tough situations . During school I tried various clubs but my favorite's were Events planning, First Aid and Toastmasters. I enjoyed these as they helped people in different ways. Events Planning taught me how to help plan for different events in the school ,It also taught me to be a servant of the people when we would prepare food, drinks or snacks and serving them while under pressure and finding ways to adapt to situations as well as problem solving.First Aid was one of my passions as it opened the way towards my career choice, attending to injuries and how to react in emergencies. We were the first port of call for all sporting injuries where we learnt how to treat stabilize and hand over sports injuries to either medics or team doctors.
Toastmasters was all about confidence building interaction and leaning to speak in front of a lot of people. It created platforms for debate on a lot of topics . This allowed me to be vocal and speak about what was on my mind openly without worrying about being judged by the people .
I always try to give my best in everything I do as I believe one gets out what they you put in. For this course I would be willing to do all the work and more. Studying at university level would be a once off opportunity that I will not take for granted and I will make most of it to set myself up for life
