Personal Statement
I have been swimming from the age of nine years old. I come from a small third world country in Africa called Zimbabwe and I was inspired by watching local swimmers like Kirsty Coventry who is now our current Minister of Sport. I have grown passionate over the years about swimming and have risen up to compete at National level.
My dream is to someday swim competitively on an international platform and inspire many African girls like me by showing them that through courage, determination and commitment the sky is not even the limit when it comes to achieving your dreams.
I am a determined young lady and I strive hard in every competition to achieve my Personal Best swim times. I continue to work on my technique and improve on methods that will keep pushing me to greater heights of achievement in the sport of swimming. I believe in being a team player and this has resulted in excellent relay team event results as success was achieved by working together for a common goal. Accepting each other’s weaknesses and strengths and encouraging one another.
I am a firm believer of balancing my schoolwork with my swimming and pacing myself to achieve that balance. I believe an athlete can achieve on and off the field of play, that is, in the classroom and in the pool. I study hard and put in extra time to maintain my grades. And I participate in other extra-curricular activities at school outside of swimming. I have also taken to including extra sporting activities, field hockey and archery to my sporting programme to keep me physically active and fit.
Coming from Africa where the plight of the girl child achieving educational and sporting success is usually a tall order, my hopes and dreams are to become a beacon of light to all African girls that if they strive for success a college education is very possible and within their reach. Furthermore, coming from a single parent headed household, I pray I reach the highest level possible in my swimming and college journey making myself, my siblings and most importantly my mother proud of me for all the love support and investment and sacrifices that have been and continue to be sown in me.
