I'm Sophia Irem Iskenderoglu and I live in Turkey in a bicultural and bilingual family with 3 cats. I have citizenships in the United States and in Turkey. I started swimming when I was 5 and I've been swimming competitively for 8 years. Before that, I was on a ski team but decided that swimming was my happy place.
It took two years of hard work to be able to qualify for TOHM (Turkey's Olympic Prep Center), for elite swimmers in Turkey. In TOHM, I've learned to be a responsible, hard-working, and positive swimmer. My usual school week starts at 6 AM when I leave home and I finish at 8:30 PM when I return home to eat dinner and study. This includes school, 8 trainings, and 3 fitness sessions. On Saturday, I have 2 trainings and I'm off on Sunday. I've been chosen for the Turkish National Team three times. My greatest moments so far have been getting 2nd place in an 800 Free relay at the Comen Cup and having opportunities to train with an Italian Olympic swimmer and a Turkish Olympic swimmer.
I want to qualify for the Jr. European Championships for the first time when I am a Sophomore. My second goal is to swim with a hardcore university swim team in the United States. Going to the European and World Championships later, leading into the next Olympics would be a dream come true for my third swimming goal.
For now, my favorite school subject is Chemistry. I'm thinking about studying behavioral science/psychology/biology or Pre-Veterinary Medicine at University. I am currently researching my interests for the best University major. I have always wanted to study in the United States and am looking forward to learning different educational methods. My education goal is to keep my GPA in the 90 percentile. 4th-8th grade I averaged 93 percent. In 9th grade I had an 83 percent for 1st semester. Because of Covid, I got the same exact grade for 2nd semester. My posted 10th grade 1st semester grades ranged from 91.667 to 100. It was hard because of Zoom classes, but I did it!
Because I grew up with two cultures, I bring a unique view to things that I do. I would like to bring my different point of view, kindness, hard work, and eagerness to learn to a great group of serious women swimmers. I'm looking for a serious coach, who brings great team spirit and discipline to his or her group. I'm willing to put in the time for training because swimming for me is fantastic.
Thank you.
