Yara Lima – Personal Statement
My name is Yara Lima, I’m a 20 years old woman from Angola, a country in Midwest Africa. Since I was child I always wish that I completed my studying abroad, especially in the United States because it is an English speaking country and, in today's world, it is crucial to speak more than one language, and there is nothing better than to speak one of the most spoke languages in the world, and because I am very interested in the diversity of cultures that a live in college might offer and how it can make me more open minded about certain issue in live. Therefore, I have been researching about the academic life in the United Stated and I am very interested in the experiences that one might encounter. I believe that the universities in United States can provide me a diversity of skills that will help me not only in my professional career but also in my personal live. In addition, I truly believe that United States has a great environment for international students where it is possible to balance the academic life with social life.
My country is under development, and facing serious economic and social challenges, therefore it is an advantage for me, as a young Angolan citizen, to obtain my education in a country such the United Stage because it will add an extreme value to my personality and to my country as my primary goal is to go back and contribute to its development.
Since the end of the civil war in my country, the Angolan society has improved significantly. The government started investing in some cities' reconstruction as well as investing in the country's natural researches, such as diamonds and oil, providing more jobs opportunities in those areas. The major I am applying for is Chemistry Engineering and I chose this major mainly because I am fascinated with chemistry and how people use their chemistry knowledge to make the world go around. Moreover, this field has a lot of job opportunities in my country as well as in many other countries round the world. It is an area where I will have the opportunity to see the chemical processes of the oil transformation into its derivatives and have the opportunity to try and find more efficient ways to produce it.
I apply to Colorado School of Mines because it has a great engineer program and, its Chemistry Engineer programs focus in natural recourses, what is an advantage for me as a student. I am certain that Mines' programs will pave the way for my future giving me the necessary tools to survive the work world and making me capable to work and help my country developed. Moreover, Colorado School of Mines also has a great swimming program and, as one of the best swimmers in my country, I would like to continuo my swimming career as a college swimmer.
