Personal Statement
Introduction
I am Swagiah Mubiru.
I am 18 years old and a student of Aga Khan High School.
I am a national swimmer pursuing this both in the pool and in open water.
I was introduced to swimming at the age of six by my mother's sister Florence Nakakawa, who is serving a second term as the treasurer of Uganda Swimming Federation but also has three of her children involved in the sport.
My aunt took me to the swimming pool at Aga Khan Nursery School even though I was at another school. She, my mother Teddy Batenga, who also serves at swimming galas as an official, my cousins Freda Nakafu, Francis Mugalu and Fredrick Luzinda have since been my biggest fans.
I started out with coach Tonnie Kasujja at Dolphins. But since I was learning and swimming alone, I always came to the pool earlier than those doing it in groups and learnt quickly. By the time I was seven, I was already taking part in competitive swimming galas.
Dolphins had a system where one progressed from Kasujja's hands to coach Muzafaru Muwanguzi's performance class. I do not remember how and when the transition happened for me but I was in coach Muzafaru’s class for a long time until 2022 when he started a new club called Gators.
I have over this period represented both Dolphins and Gators and local and international swimming galas.
I have also represented my country at several regional events (Cana Zone III and Cana Zone IV), continental (Africa Juniors, Cana Grand Prix) and international swimming and open water championships like the International School Sport Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade, World Juniors and senior World Championships.

Carrying the national flag
Swimming has been about ups and downs. I remember racing older girls in Mombasa in 2016 when I was still representing Dolphins.
From then on, I have had to grow fast. In September 2019, I was selected to represent the national team at the 13th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Tunisia.
Later in December that year, I went to the CANA Zone III Swimming and Open Water Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, where I had open water debut in a man-made pond.
The following year was quiet because of the Covid-19 pandemic but I was back representing the country in 2021 at the Zone III Championships hosted at home in Kampala. Here, the open water event was held at the Speke Resort Munyonyo swimming pool.
All this set me up for a busy 202 that started with representing Uganda at the CANA Zone IV Championships in Lusaka, Zambia.
In May 2022, I competed to the International School Sport Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade in Normandy, France. I also swam at the eighth Fina World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, Peru.
In 2023, I competed in open water at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan in July. This is when I decided to forge a career out of open water that runs co-currently with my swimming pool career.
I also competed in open water at the Africa Junior Championships in Mauritius and I am set to start 2024 with another open water race at the World Aquatic Championships in Doha, Qatar.
