Personal Statement
I got into swimming at the age of 5 when my neighbour suggested I try it at my school's swimming pool. From here on, I developed a passion for swimming and progressed through my school programme, local club and then my city's club, the City of Liverpool Swimming Club. I have reached British national finals every year since 2013. In the summer of 2015 aged 14, I represented Team GB at the European Youth Olympics in Tbilisi, Georgia, meaning I missed that year's summer nationals. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience as it exposed me to completely different environments that I had never experienced before.
In February 2016, I moved from the City of Liverpool swimming club to Mount Kelly College in Devon, a 7 hour drive from my home in Liverpool. This was a big decision for my family and I, but it was definitely the right one. Under the guidance of Robin Brew, I reached finals in all of my 7 events at British Summer nationals 2016. The following season (2016-2017) I moved from Robin's squad to Emma Collings-Barnes' squad, who allowed me to qualify and win my first British national title in the 100m backstroke.
In college, I want to be able to combine my passion for swimming with my academics so I do not fall behind in either. I am hoping to get good A level grades in my 3 subjects - English Literature, Religious Studies and Spanish, and hopefully start a course that keeps me interested during my time in the US. In an American university, I hope to push myself both academically and in the pool so I make the most of the opportunity given.
My team here at Mount Kelly is like one big family, and I thoroughly enjoy being part of a tight-knit team because it makes training and racing more enjoyable. I am on a scholarship and am sponsored by Funkita Swimwear and I'm proud I have earned my place here. Currently, I am chasing the goal of getting on a British junior European team by achieving the qualifying time in April 2018 at the British Swimming Championships, which is less than half a second off my PB.
