I am a dedicated, passionate, and competitive student athlete who wishes to continue to challenge myself at the college level. As a junior in high school who has been swimming since the age of ten, swimming has become an integral part of my life. I hope to experience the challenge as well as the camaraderie of being on a college swim team, while continuing to maintain my academic excellence.
Academically, I am at the top of my high school class and I have consistently enrolled in the highest level of classes offered at my school. I began Advanced Placement classes in my junior year, and I am also taking college classes through the FastTrack program at Brookdale Community College. I plan to continue taking college courses through Dual Enrollment in my senior year. During my sophomore year, I participated in the JumpStart Medical Program at my high school, which is a pre-professional program partnering with a local hospital and healthcare professionals which provided me with first-hand experience with careers in the medical field, a field that I am considering for college. I continue to volunteer at the local hospital in the Maternity department. One of my most memorable experiences over the past year was my trip to London and Paris this past June with my school's World Language club! I love to travel and I hope to be able to study abroad in college.
I am a well respected classmate and serve as a role model for other students in my high school. For the second year in a row, I was elected by my peers as the secretary of the Class of 2020. I am an inducted member of the National Honor Society, and I was named Student of the Month March 2018 for the sophomore class. For the past several years, I have volunteered for my town as well as for a local Rotary Club. In addition, I have done mission trips to Philadelphia and Chicago, as well as volunteer work through my church youth group.
Swimming is a part of my life I cannot imagine living without. I began swimming during a difficult time in my life. When I was ten years old, I became very ill and was eventually diagnosed with lupus. Because of this, I was unable to spend long hours in the sun. So while I had always been a soccer player, I had to find something else to do which would not require extended periods of time outside. That summer after my diagnosis, I joined a local summer swim team which practiced at an indoor pool. I soon realized that swimming was something that I wanted to do year-round, and I joined a club team after that first summer. Swimming is unlike other sports in that while it is an individual sport, it is also a team sport, especially at the high school level. The bond of a swim team is one that is not easily broken. In addition, being a swimmer has taught me goal setting, time management, and decision making skills that are useful not only in swimming but in all aspects of my life. Most of all, swim has taught me perseverance during difficult times.
