Personal Statement

My name is Kelly Derasmo, I am a 18 year-old senior at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Virginia. I train with The Fish swim team based in McLean, Virginia, with Coach Raymond Benecki. “Coach Ray” coached Kate Ziegler, formerworld record holder for the women's 800m and 1500m. Therefore, we do a lot of distance -- usually our 2 1/2 hour practices are 8-10,000 yards.  I am conditioned well enough to handle either distance freestyle or distance I.M./ specialty practices and will not struggle with college workouts.  That being said, I am a well-rounded swimmer who is comfortable swimming any event.  I hope to make the Futures cut this summer for the 500 free, 100 & 200 fly, and 100 back. I plan on taking the SAT in May and likely again in September.  I believe that my demanding club and high school swim schedule has taught me well how to manage time and stay on top of a demanding academic load.  I like to plan and prepare well for upcoming academic and athletic challenges.  I look forward to hopefully having an opportunity to continue to compete at a high level in college while pursuing a challenging academic curriculum.
