Personal Statement

My name is Elena Gorchakova and I am a sophomore from the American School of the Hague in the Netherlands. I love to stay active and engaged, both in and out of school. Academics are a big part of my life and I’ve worked hard to keep a 4.0 GPA while challenging myself with classes like Trigonometry Honors and IB Dutch a year early. I enjoy learning and pushing myself to see what I can achieve.

Sports are my other big passion. Throughout my life I would say I've displayed high athletic ability in most of them. Tennis is my main focus. I've been playing it since I was 3 and I train hard to keep improving and to hopefully earn an ITF ranking soon. For the past year, I have been dealing with a wrist injury which halted my progress but I've managed to stay fit and I'm on my way to healing now. Competing in regional and national tournaments has taught me a lot about mental toughness and discipline. Besides tennis, I also play volleyball, run track, and am the captain of my school’s cheer team.

Outside of academics and sports, I love music. I play piano and the flute, which have given me a lot of patience and focus. I also enjoy studying languages like Chinese and Russian because I find other cultures fascinating.
