Junior Brooke Ptacek, while dropping both of her Friday singles matches, still had a successful season at 26-13 in singles, having played against the No. 1 players all season. She went 4-0 in doubles for a final record of 30-13. “Brooke had two hard-fought losses on Friday, but she showed impressive resilience in bouncing back to make it close before falling,” Bevis said of Ptacek’s 6-2, 7-5 loss to Olathe West’s Autumn Jones. That dropped her into the consolation bracket where she faced the Wichita regional runner-up but came up short once again, falling 9-6. “I’m happy with the way she competed Friday, even when things weren’t going her way. I’m excited to see her continued growth and improvement leading into her senior season.”

2021-2022 Girls Regional Tennis

Place 3rd in the Regionals for 6A girls Tennis. Our team took first for the tournament. The Teams in the regionals are Dodge City HS, Garden City HS, Haysville-Campus, Hutchinson HS, Liberal HS, Wichita-Northwest HS, Wichita-South HS, Wichita-West HS. Ptacek had the toughest road in qualifying, starting off with a 6-1, 6-2 dominating win over Michael Mink of Dodge City. That put her in the quarterfinals against Katy Classen of Liberal and the two Western Athletic Conference foes went into marathon mode in a two-plus hour match. Ptacek lost the opening set 2-6 and was down 0-3 in the second before rallying for a 7-5 victory. That put them into a super tie-breaker (first to 10 points, win by 2 points). Ptacek fended off three match points before putting on a 5-point blitz against Classen to win 11-9. “ “Despite this long and physically grueling match, Brooke turned around and gave the No. 1 seed (Gracie Foster of Hutchinson) her most competitive match of the day (falling 2-6, 4-6). I was proud of the grit she showed in those two matches.”

Western Association Conference

Played in the WAC tournament. Came out with 4-0 wins and took the the conference in #1 Singles. Also won the team title for the conference. Made my goal bringing home the gold. Junior Brooke Ptacek claimed the No. 1 singles title with wins over Morgan Shorb of Hays (8-4), Laura Daniel of Great Bend (8-2), Andrea Morales of Dodge City (8-0) and Katie Classen of Liberal (8-0). Thus, she won 32 games against only 6 losses. “I was impressed by her steady level of play throughout the day,” Bevis said of Ptacek. “Many teams put their strongest player in No. 1 singles, so it is often the deepest and most challenging field. Although a couple of her matches were close, she was in control of all the matches she played. This is one of the most consistent days Brooke has had so far this year, and I think it should feed in well to regionals this weekend.”
