My name is Melani Griffin. I came to live with my guardians over a year ago when they chose to take me in as their ward. I lived with my Mother up until my eighth grade year when I was removed by family services for abuse. While living with my mother I suffered both physical and mental abuse. I was held back a year in 1st grade by her in an effort to qualify for more state assistance. Despite asking several times she would never allow me to play sports and made keeping high grades difficult due to taking care of my siblings. After I was removed from my Mother's home I was placed in her sister's home (my Aunt). There I continued to be mistreated and after one year faced being placed in the foster care system. It was at this time my guardians, Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien took me in. Through their care and guidance I have begun my journey to create my own life. I started this journey by joining the Houston County High School Cross Country Team. I ran for the JV team and finished top ten in all of my races. I have been working hard academically and have my GPA up to a 3.4. I recently took the the PSAT and scored a 1470. Currently I am taking additional courses this summer and next school year in an effort to graduate a year early. I will be a traditional senior as of August school year 21-22. I am currently running varsity track in several events. I look to go to college and pursue a career in criminal justice and possibly serve in the military as an officer. I know that the only person that can make any of this happen is me. I will not let the events that have happened to me shape my future, but rather help motivate me to achieve my best and live my dreams.
