I developed a love for running when I was in 5th grade. I would run 5K events with my brother and found that it was something so good for my soul and body. During my middle school years, I had a lot of accomplishments both in cross country and track and field as I experienced winning State titles both in cross country and track. I learned the ability to be a strong competitor towards my competition, but I also learned the value of Sportsmanship. Words often associated with sportsmanship are polite, fair and ethical towards the competition. Whether you win or lose, I have always been taught to be gracious to the other team, players, coaches and officials. I believe you must be empathetic towards your competition; but that doesn't mean you let them win. In fact, it's just the opposite. I believe the best sportsmanship is to bring you very best, each time you step out on the course, track or at practice. You owe it to your competitors, team yourself to give every ounce of energy and effort to push and be pushed further than thought possible.
I have found thru this mindset that it is fundamental to competition itself. I am a firm believer that if you only do sports to make yourself better, you are missing out on the big picture though. Not all the joy in sports is derived from personal improvement. Making my teammates better and giving them the confidence in themselves is one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in my sports career. Setting my goals and shattering those goals as well as my teammates, is one of the greatest experiences that I feel I have the privilege to experience in sports.
My goals for the future are to show up every day with the best effort to achieve excellence in all that I do. I want to run at the collegiate level, but I also want to look for the lessons in life to better myself in academics and a career.
