Personal Statement
How is Maria as an athlete?:
I have not always been a good competitor; there were instances when anxiety overtook me during races. However, these setbacks have contributed to my growth and development as a competitor. Resilience defines me. I view failures as lessons that fuel my motivation to improve. Each race has something to teach me or an opportunity to teach others. What I mean, is that by sharing my own experiences in races with my teammates, I can teach them new things that will help them in their mental control during the race, in how to stay motivated, or even how to plan their race. In other words, even though this is an individual sport, I like to help my teammates.
In addition, I have discipline and consistency. Even on weary or demotivated days, my objectives propel me through training sessions. On the other hand, I am a focused person, I have learned to let my personal problems separate from my training and competition to allow me to focus on my goals. Lastly, my identity as an athlete revolves around my passion for running. Often, an involuntary smile comes out while running. It may sound weird but This spontaneous expression sums up the deep pleasure I take in this sport.
What are my goals?:
I want to study in the US to continue with my sport. In my country, there is no good support for athletes, and I know that in the USA, I will find the support needed to reach my goal of becoming an Olympic athlete. But first, I want to compete representing a university, gradually demonstrating my talent, and elevating the reputation of the university.
How is Maria as a student?:
I have good management of my time; always turn in my work on time, and I don't like to leave work until the last minute. I have a good balance of academics, track and field, and spiritual life (I'm Catholic). For me, those three things have the same importance. Lastly, my grades are as high as my willingness to learn
