Personal Statement

I have always been active in athletics since I was 4 years old.  I began Competing in gymnastics at age 5 and by age 14, I was a level 10 (highest level) gymnast.  I qualified for state and  regionals as a level 7,8,9 and 10.  I also qualified for nationals as a level 9 and placed 3rd in the nation on floor and 4th on vault.  I competed as a level 10 for one year (my freshman year) and also began pole vaulting.  I began pole vaulting in November of 2012 and by June of 2013, I was clearing a height of 10'6".  I qualified for USATF nationals, but tore my ACL/LCL doing gymnastics in July of 2013.  I was unable to do any athletics for an entire year; a year that I spent in physical therapy.   I returned to pole vaulting in June of 2014 and qualified for USATF nationals once again.  By May of 2015, my personal record was 11'.  I cleared 11' to win the Louisiana 1A state Championships.  I feel that my determination and drive makes me a better athlete.  I am determined to improve each time I jump and I will never stop striving to be better.  I have also had to face obstacles in my academic career.  I was diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade and have had to work extremely hard to make the grades that I have.  I have maintained a 3.0 all while training for pole vaulting and coaching gymnastics a total of 20 hours per week.  I feel like the obstacles that I have had to overcome have only helped to make me mentally stronger in all areas of my life.  I would love to continue my pole vaulting career in college and know that I could be an asset to your team.
