Running isn’t just a sport to me—it’s a life lesson. Running has shown me that most things in life are mental, showing me that I am capable of more than I have ever thought I could be. Running has also taught me to be disciplined. I know that if I stay up late and eat a lot of sweets the day before a meet, it will impact my performance negatively the next day. I have learned to forget all my problems and just focus on the task at hand—finish the run. Running helps to clear my head after a long day at school and can lift my mood and make me happier when I am sad. It has taught me to manage my time while taking three Advanced Placement classes and three honors classes as a junior. Lastly, running has led me to find more people just like me; leaders with a strong work-ethic who won’t quit when faced with adversity.
As much as I love running, academics have always come first for me. I have always enjoyed learning and I strive for excellence and to reach my highest potential. I am always willing to assist others if they need help, which is why I enjoy volunteering time to help elementary students to read. I want to be a leader and a mentor to those children and all other students. As a junior and a sophomore, I was nominated to be a captain of my Indoor Track team. I was also invited to the Southern Maine Athletic Association Leadership Conference where I was able to showcase and improve my leadership skills by my athletic director. I may not be the most vocal on the soccer field or track but I always try to lead by a positive example and strive to support my teammates.
