Personal Statement

Track and field is something that has been apart of my life for about 5 years now and hopefully will remain apart of my life for the 4 years that come after I graduate high school. I began running track in 6th grade because I was faster than most girls my age when I was in middle school. However, when I got to high school I realized that was no longer the case I was still fast but I wasn't faster than most people just some. Everything was alright though because I also found out in high school that I could jump higher than most girls. I tried high jump in middle school but it wasn't until high school when I started to focus on it more. From then it became all about reaching goals. First I was just worried about reaching the varsity mark in high jump at my school which is 4'8. My best jump going into freshman year was 4'4. I though I had little chance to get it but eventually I did and even cleared 4'10 before the season was over. In preparing for sophomore year my new goal was to qualify for the state meet. The qualifying mark was 5'2 and my best was 4'10. I thought if I could improve by 6 inches in one year another 4 would be no problem. However it was. I struggled to get past 4'10 at the beginning of the season and was very frustrated. I ended up clearing 5'0 twice last year but didn't qualify for states. I will have two goals for my upcoming junior year qualify for states and break my schools record of 5'3. I believe I can do it and I think this will be the year.

Sports are not the only thing that drive me however. I am also very dedicated in school. I have already completed a few honors classes in my first two years of high school and am ready for some more challenging AP classes. I am also driven by my family. My parents want me to succeed as much as I want myself to and they inspire me to do great things as a result of them driving me to practices and training sessions and watching and cheering at all of my meets and games. Track has taught me many things like how to make friends and learn names just so you can cheer for people in their races and you can have someone to cheer for you. Track has also taught me about doing what's important for the team. In this upcoming year my team won't be as good as we have been and to help I want to try a few new events and see if I can find something I'm also good at to try and give my team a few extra points in meets. I've been thinking of doing hurdles or long jump to see if I have a hidden talent in either of those events. From track I've learned that there is no better feeling than the 3rd attempt jump at a personal best or a 1st place jump and there is no better feeling than when I line up for a race and get set in my blocks. I love track and I don't want to stop after high school.
